South Africa is arguably the most bio diverse wine producing country in the world, and it is no wonder that wine lovers from around the world flock there to sample the wine and enjoy the beautiful scenery. The fact that the South African climate and soil is so well suited to growing high quality grapes means that over the past two decades the popularity of South African wine has soared and it is also very notable for delivering exceptional value for money.

De Waal comes from Stellenbosch which is one of the most famous wine regions in South Africa. Stellenbosch is the second oldest wine region after Constantia, and is responsible for around 14% of the country’s annual wine production. First planted in 1679, Stellenbosch is located 28 miles east of Cape Town.

De Waal has a historic family legacy that boasts nine generations of passionate winemakers and dates back to the 1800’s. DeWaal’s mature vineyards offer grapes that produce great wines which are remarkable for their consistent quality and elegance. This family owned winery caused quite a stir in 1998 by winning Wine Magazine’s Champion Pinotage award with their single vineyard wine, the Top-of-the-Hill Pinotage, made from more than 50-year-old vines.

The Young Vines range is exclusive to us in the UK and is a range that has always been very popular since we introduced it a few years ago. This is due to the high quality, very attractive price point and excellent packaging.

De Waal Young Vines Chenin Blanc, Stellenbosch
A grape variety made famous in the Loire, France, Chenin Blanc has been tremendously successful in South Africa. This wine is full of pineapple and tropical fruit flavours, but has a very crisp dry finish with refreshing minerality.

De Waal Young Vines Sauvignon Blanc, Stellenbosch
Sauvignon Blanc is one of the most popular white varietals of the moment, and fans will not be disappointed with this example. Full of grassy notes and citrus fruit flavours, and with a clean crisp finish so characteristic of good quality Sauvignon Blanc.

De Waal Young Vines Merlot, Stellenbosch
A personal favourite with a bowl of pasta, this is a plummy easy drinking Merlot with notes of blackberries and a bit more complexity and richness that can sometimes be found with similarly priced competitors wines.

De Waal Young Vines Shiraz, Stellenbosch
This Shiraz has the typical hallmarks of a good full-bodied red wine from Stellbosch with intense fruit, mocha coffee undertones and a spicy finish.

Chocolate Box

Blaxland Vineyards was formed in 1995 and over the next eight years developed a number of vineyards in order to supply premium grapes for most major Australian wine companies. Blaxland now manages four vineyards in three of Australia’s prominent grape growing regions (Barossa, Adelaide Hills and Limestone Coast) totalling nearly 600 hectares, with both regional and varietal grape diversification covering 12 red and 5 white varieties. Katie Jones

Katie Jones is a familiar presence at our #explorewine tastings and we’ve sold her wines for over 5 years. Originally from Leicestershire, Katie uprooted and moved to the Languedoc nearly 20 years ago. She set up her own winery, Domaine Jones, in 2009 after uncovering a vineyard two years previous. Katie now owns 12 hectares of vines spread across vineyards in Maury, Paziols and Tuchan and her wines capture the essence of the region.
