Australia – A New Wave from Down Under
WINE TREND 3
For a few years a wind of change has been blowing through Australian winemaking. Fading into the background are the old-school Aussie “blockbuster” wines with big oak and heavily extracted fruit, and in their place come small producers making elegant fruit-focused wines with a real freshness about them. No producer demonstrates this better than Elysian Springs. When we tasted their Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc we were really blown away and simply had to list them. And their Syrah and Chardonnay are equally impressive. Their Marley Farm Pinot Gris, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz are more easy-drinking in style, but no less elegant.
Our world-exclusive range, Red Rock, has also been revamped to reflect the new trends, with eye-catching new packaging and a new white too. The revised line-up includes a Chardonnay, Verdelho and Shiraz.
ELYSIAN SPRINGS
Elysian Springs is a 200-acre estate located in the northern end of the Adelaide Hills district, bordering the Eden Valley.
The vineyards were established by the Seppelt family in 1980 with the planting of Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, thereby becoming one of the first vineyards planted to the latter Burgundian varietals in South Australia. Now under the stewardship of Brad Rey and Glen Wandless, sustainable viticulture has been adopted along with biodynamic and organic techniques to produce wines with a true sense of place. The philosophy includes composting everything (including the estate’s sheep manure), the planting of cover crops, integrated pest management (including the planting of beehives) and vine balance practices that ensure sustainability of the vineyard ecosystem
RED ROCK
Over the past decade Red Rock has gained an enviable reputation for producing superb ultra premium wines. They are handcrafted on the estate from vines that creep up the side of a dormant volcano west of Geelong. The mineral-rich soil, low rainfall and cool climate result in a unique terroir which, when coupled with sensitive winemaking, yields distinctly individual wines with power and finesse.
