Spain – A Land of Diversity
WINE TRENDS 7
In the last four years our range from Spain has changed beyond all recognition. While the traditional favourites such as Rioja continue to be hugely popular, it is with the very small producers in lesser-known areas that we have established new partnerships to ensure we are offering our customers the best possible selection. La Senda – naturally made Mencia from Bierzo is one such example, and our latest addition is Goru, a Monastrell from Jumilla with one of the most eye-catching labels we have ever seen. The wine is exquisite too. From the same winery comes Goru Blanco and the limited edition Goru 38 Barricas.
Owning 25 hectares of vineyards in the heart of Jumilla, south east Spain, Ego Bodegas’ vineyards are planted with Tempranillo, Syrah and Monastrell Pie Franco vines, which are about 50 years old. Boasting a largely continental climate, Jumilla is a very warm region for growing grapes – long, hot summers and cool, wet winters make ideal conditions for the native Monastrell grape. Ego Bodegas has a delicate approach to winemaking: no chemical pesticides, herbicides or fertilisers are used in the vineyards at all, ensuring the pure fruit expression and the health of the land are preserved at all times
